In early 2022, during the height of Canada's COVID-19 mass vaccination campaign, Ottawa experienced a cluster of unexplained infant deaths. Grus began to investigate whether there was a correlation between these deaths and the COVID-19 mRNA vaccination status of the infants' nursing mothers. Breast milk can transmit antibodies — and potentially other biological materials — from a vaccinated mother to a newborn.

This was not fringe speculation. It was a detective doing what detectives do: following a pattern of deaths to its possible cause.

What Happened Next

Her superiors told her to stop. She continued investigating. She accessed the vaccination status records of the mothers of the deceased infants through provincial health databases — without obtaining the specific authorization her department required for that type of health data access.

Ottawa Police charged her internally with discreditable conduct and insubordination. A disciplinary hearing found her guilty of discreditable conduct in September 2024. She was penalized — docked pay — and her investigation was shut down.

No government inquiry was launched into the cluster of infant deaths she was investigating. No independent review was ordered. No Health Canada investigation followed. The question she was asking — is there a link? — was never officially answered. It was simply closed.

The Liberal Government's Role

This happened on the Trudeau Liberal government's watch — and it is inseparable from the policy environment that government created.

The Liberal government ran one of the most aggressive vaccination campaigns in Canadian history. Federal employees were mandated to receive COVID-19 vaccines or lose their jobs. Military personnel faced discharge. Truckers lost their livelihoods. Unjabbed Canadians were banned from domestic air and rail travel. The messaging from Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and Prime Minister Trudeau was consistent and relentless: the vaccines are safe, effective, and mandatory. Dissent was suppressed, demonetized, and in some cases, criminalized.

In that environment — where questioning the vaccines was treated as a public health threat — a detective investigating a potential connection between those same vaccines and infant deaths was not going to be celebrated. She was going to be stopped.

And she was.

The Questions That Were Never Asked

To be precise: no health authority has established a causal link between maternal mRNA vaccination and infant death. That is the current state of the evidence. Grus's investigation was shut down before it could be completed, so we do not know what she would have found.

The Liberals did not welcome it. They closed it.

Carney Inherited This

Mark Carney is not Justin Trudeau. But he leads the same party, with the same cabinet, running the same departments, staffed by the same civil servants who made these decisions. He has not called for a review. He has not acknowledged the Grus case. He has not ordered Health Canada to revisit the question of unexplained infant deaths during the vaccination period.

Silence is a policy choice. On this file, the Liberals have chosen silence — and Canadians deserve to know why.
